On 30 and 31 October 2023, Tunisia will host a conference jointly organized by Latvia, UNESCO, and the Delegation of the European Union to Tunisia, Rebuilding Trust in Media. The conference aims at highlighting the importance of journalist-driven media literacy in various regions worldwide through sharing Latvia’s experience. North African media practitioners, students of journalism and all those interested in the subject have been invited to participate.

Disinformation disguised as news is increasing in the global world, alongside with the multitude of information channels not bound by the universally accepted principles of journalism. This is undermining the role of media in a democratic society and creating a fertile ground for eroding trust in media and democratic institutions. Therefore, it is important for journalists to play a proactive role – help counter disinformation and increase the media literacy level in society, thereby also rebuilding trust in the media.

The event will be opened by Reinis Brusbārdis, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, and a video message to the audience will be delivered by Tawfik Jelassi, Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, UNESCO. The conference will be moderated by Rita Ruduša, representative of Latvia at the UNESCO International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC). Diāna Kraiņeva, media literacy advisor at the Baltic Centre for Media Excellence, will showcase Latvia’s experience.

The conference is organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, the Delegation of Latvia to UNESCO, the Baltic Centre for Media Excellence, Manouba University in Tunisia, the UNESCO Office for the Maghreb, and the EU Media Support Program in Tunisia.
