On 2 September 2026, the Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Russia was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In full solidarity with Germany, a note of protest was presented to him condemning the Russian Federation’s direct involvement in the attempted drone attack on Leipzig Airport in Germany on 4 August 2026.
"The incident caused by the Russian Federation is not simply another hybrid attack; it is an act of state-sponsored terrorism by Russia on German soil and a direct threat to the security of all of Europe," emphasised the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže. Russia is deliberately trying to destabilise and divide Europe by testing our resilience, unity and determination. In this way, Russia is seeking to undermine our support for Ukraine. It will not succeed.
During the meeting, the Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Russia was presented with a firm demand that the Russian Federation immediately cease carrying out such and similar hostile actions on the territory of EU and NATO member states and against their populations.
The level of military threat in Latvia has not changed. At the same time, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and hybrid attacks against NATO Allies are worsening the overall security situation across Europe. Latvia will continue to closely coordinate measures with EU and NATO member states in order to strengthen our common security and resilience.
