On 15 December 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Krišjānis Kariņš, met with nine Ambassadors of non-European-Union countries, members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). At the meeting the Foreign Minister exchanged views with the Ambassadors on Latvia’s candidacy for a seat on the United Nations Security Council, which, in the Minister’s opinion, affirms Latvia’s commitment to engaging more actively in promoting international peace and security, fostering an effective multilateral cooperation, and protecting international law.

The Minister and the Ambassadors discussed Russia’s war against Ukraine, developments in the Middle East, the enlargement of the EU, and Latvia’s candidacy for the UN Security Council. The Foreign Minister thanked the Ambassadors for the unity demonstrated by their countries in condemning the Russian war against Ukraine and urged for continuing Russia’s international isolation.

The meeting organised by the British Ambassador to Latvia also brought together the Ambassadors of the United States of America, South Korea, Israel, Japan, Canada, Norway, Switzerland, and Turkey resident in Latvia. This was the second meeting of its kind this year.
