On 8 December 2025, Raimonds Jansons, Latvian Ambassador to Poland, at the international scientific conference “Poland and Latvia in the 20th and 21st Centuries: Parallel Developments, Different Experiences. History – Politics and Security”, introduced leading Latvian and Polish historians, political scientists, international relations experts, and security policy researchers to Latvia’s priorities in the UN Security Council. The Ambassador also highlighted Latvia’s opportunity to raise political issues at the international level that are particularly important for the security of the Baltic Sea region countries.

The Ambassador stressed that Latvia and Poland are strategic partners and that close cooperation between the two countries is essential within the UN platform. Latvia’s priorities are closely linked to the conference’s chosen theme and the analysis of the historical development of Latvia and Poland presented therein. The shared historical experience of both countries serves as an important basis for understanding today’s security challenges and is an essential element of cooperation in relations between the two countries.

The conference is organized by Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in cooperation with the University of Latvia and other research centres. Its aim is to analyse the historical cooperation between Latvia and Poland and contemporary security challenges.

The event was organised as part of the diplomatic programme to support the implementation of Latvia’s priorities during its participation in the UN Security Council and to promote Latvia’s recognition. On 3 June 2025, Latvia was elected to the UN Security Council for the term from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2027. Serving as a non-permanent member of the Security Council will be an important tool for ensuring Latvia’s foreign policy interests. The primary objective of Latvia’s membership is to safeguard and strengthen an international environment that supports the security of Latvia while using and enhancing the opportunities provided by multilateral diplomacy.
