On 23 September 2022, in New York, during the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Barbados, Jerome Xavier Walcott, for a discussion on bilateral relations and cooperation in international organisations.

Edgars Rinkēvičs commended current cooperation, which had taken place, for the most part, in international organisations and through contacts between the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). Latvia is prepared to seek points of intersection for the strengthening of bilateral cooperation.

The Latvian Foreign Minister pointed out that in 2025, for the first time, Latvia would stand as a candidate in elections to the United Nations Security Council for the term of 2026–2027.

Diplomatic relations between Latvia and Barbados were established on 15 May 2008.
