On 15 March 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the Speaker of the Senate of Canada, George J. Furey.
The Foreign Minister thanked Canada for its leadership and indispensable contribution to the security of Latvia, as well as emphasizing the role of transforming the Canadian-led enhanced Forward Presence battle group to a combat-capable brigade. The Minister stressed the importance of that measure for the further strengthening of Latvia’s deterrence and defence capabilities.
During the meeting, the officials discussed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the threat it posed to a rules-based international order and transatlantic security. The Foreign Minister and the Speaker agreed that it was essential to continue a close political dialogue and strengthen cooperation in the field of security and the fight against disinformation.
George Furey and the delegation he leads are staying in Latvia on a visit from 11 to 15 March.
