On 6 November 2025, at 9:00, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, Baiba Braže, will deliver a keynote address for an international conference, “Guarding the Gate: Sanctions, Export Controls & Business Responsibilities”, organised by the Financial Intelligence Unit of Latvia (FIU Latvia).
This is the seventh annual sanctions conference organised by FIU. This year’s edition focuses on sanctions policy, judicial and supervisory practices, business compliance strategies, as well as the economic impact of sanctions.
The participants include the Head of FIU Latvia Toms Platacis, the Director General of the State Revenues Service for customs, Director of the Customs Authority Raimonds Zukuls, as well as international experts – Advocate-General at the Court of Justice of the European Union Laila Medina, former Director of the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) John E. Smith, and the Sanctions Coordinator and Senior Ministerial Adviser at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland Pia Sarivaara, along with other sanctions experts from the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, and the European Union Member States.
The conference will be livestreamed on the FIU YouTube channel (in Latvian and English), and LSM.
Under Law on International Sanctions and National Sanctions of the Republic of Latvia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the coordinating authority in sanction-related matters. The Financial Intelligence Unit of Latvia is the competent authority for the enforcement of international and national sanctions.
