On Monday, 23 June 2025, Parliamentary Secretary Artjoms Uršuļskis will attend a meeting of the European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, Belgium.

Ukraine. Ministers will review diplomatic efforts towards a just and lasting peace and will continue a discussion on EU military support for Ukraine. Ministers are scheduled to hold an exchange of views on the implementation of the EU strategy on countering Russia’s unconventional threat. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha will join the discussion in person.

Sanctions. EU foreign ministers will consider further steps in relation to the 18th package of sanctions against Russia, which include targeted sectoral restrictions against Russia’s energy sector, lowering the oil price cap, imposing further sanctions against shadow fleet vessels, as well as restrictive measures against the financial sector and Russian banks.

Situation in the Middle East. Ministers of the Member States will discuss the escalation between Israel and Iran. The EU Foreign Affairs Council will also look at the developments in the region, with particular attention to the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, as well as the situation in Libya.

China and EU security. Foreign ministers will discuss China and European security in the run-up to the 25th EU-China Summit in Beijing.

Ministers also intend to have an exchange of views on Georgia in the context of the rapid decline of democracy and violations of human rights in the country.

Before the Foreign Affairs Council, ministers will meet with Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on current nuclear security issues, including in Ukraine and Iran.

The Foreign Affairs Council deals with matters relating to EU external action, including the common foreign and security policy, the European security and defence policy, external trade and development cooperation. The Council’s main role is to ensure the unity, consistency and effectiveness of the EU’s external action.
