On 17 December 2025, the Embassy of Latvia in Beijing organised an informative working event for foreign ambassadors, strengthening dialogue with partner countries and promoting understanding of Latvia’s priorities in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), where it will begin its two-year participation on 1 January 2026.

Ambassador of Latvia Kārlis Eihenbaums informed about Latvia’s intentions, vision and key priorities in the UN Security Council, with particular emphasis on strengthening the rules-based international order, accountability for compliance with international law, and contributing to the promotion of just and sustainable peace in Ukraine. Latvia will be an active, reliable, and supportive partner.

Ambassadors from India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Mauritius, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Morocco, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Ireland, and Azerbaijan participated in the event and actively shared their views and experiences.

The third meeting of this kind in Beijing confirmed the partners’ interest in closer cooperation with Latvia and emphasised the importance of informal, trust-based dialogue in promoting the effectiveness of the UN Security Council’s work and putting forward joint initiatives.

The event was organised as part of the diplomatic programme to support the implementation of Latvia’s priorities during its participation in the UN Security Council and to promote Latvia’s recognition. On 3 June 2025, Latvia was elected to the UN Security Council for the term from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2027. Serving as a non-permanent member of the Security Council will be one of the most important tools for ensuring Latvia’s foreign policy interests. The primary objective of Latvia’s participation in the UN Security Council is to safeguard and strengthen an international environment that supports the security of Latvia while using and enhancing the opportunities provided by multilateral diplomacy.
