On 15 December 2025, a discussion on Latvia’s participation in the United Nations (UN) Security Council took place at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU), which was attended by Renārs Danelsons, Head of the International Organisations Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, and Louise Riis Andersen, Head of the UN Security Council Secretariat at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. The aim of the discussion was to discuss Latvia’s preparations for its two-year term on the UN Security Council, which will begin on 1 January 2026.
During the discussion, Louise Riis Andersen provided an overview of Denmark’s work in the UN Security Council to date, focusing on the organisation of daily work, the conduct of negotiations and the decision-making process in New York. The discussion also highlighted the upcoming cooperation between Latvia and Denmark within the Security Council.
Renārs Danelsons outlined Latvia’s goals and priorities in relation to its two-year term on the UN Security Council, emphasising the importance of the preparatory process and Latvia’s contribution to the work of the Security Council.
“As a highly regarded member of NB8, Denmark is one of our closest allies, with whom we share common priorities in the United Nations Security Council – maintaining an international rules-based order, promoting the Women, Peace and Security agenda, and strengthening our response capabilities to new threats, including cybersecurity challenges and climate change,” said Renārs Danelsons.
During the event, participants also discussed the role of the Security Council in strengthening international security, the importance of informal consultations, and the challenges faced by Security Council member states on a daily basis.
The discussion was moderated by Sandis Šrāders, lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences of RSU.
