On 31 October 2025, the Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia to Georgia, Edīte Medne, addressed students from Tbilisi universities at a simulation of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) debate on the topic of “Women, Peace and Security”.
The event was organized by UN Women Georgia in cooperation with the European University of Georgia, and the Danish and Latvian Embassies in Georgia. The aim of the discussion was to engage Georgian youth in a substantive dialogue on peace, gender equality and international diplomacy to mark the 25th anniversary of Resolution 1325 “On Women, Peace and Security”.
31 students from seven Georgian universities participated in the debate. During the discussion, the students demonstrated an in-depth understanding of the Women, Peace and Security agenda and UNSC procedures, as well as good negotiation skills, which allowed them to successfully complete the simulation task of agreeing on the adoption of a resolution. Additional knowledge was provided to the participants at a debate preparation seminar, where Sigita Struberga, Chair of the Board of the Latvian Association, Women for Security, led a working session on the structure and decision-making procedures at the UNSC, as well as Latvia’s priorities for its term on the UNSC.
While opening the closing session of the debate, Ambassador Medne commended the students’ performance and emphasized the role of youth leadership in strengthening democracy, peace and security in Georgia. Women, Peace and Security will be one of Latvia’s priorities for its 2026-2027 term on the UN Security Council. Latvia will advocate for the advancement of the Women, Peace, and Security agenda, protecting the rights of women and girls, empowering them, and standing up against impunity for gender-based and sexual violence in times of armed conflict.
At the conclusion of the debate, Ambassador Edīte Medne participated in the award ceremony for the participants of the discussion.
The event was implemented as part of the public diplomacy programme in support of implementing the priorities of Latvia’s membership of the United Nations Security Council and promoting Latvia’s visibility. On 3 July 2025 Latvia was elected to the UN Security Council for the 2026-2027 term. Membership of the UN Security Council will be a key instrument in pursuit and protection of Latvia’s foreign policy interests and enable Latvia to further expand its international cooperation, thereby contributing to world peace and resilience.
