On 6 November 2025, a cargo of thirty thousand tons of mineral fertilizer was shipped from the Latvia to Bangladesh, as a donation to the United Nations World Food Programme initiative. It was the fifth shipment of mineral fertilizers originating in Russia, owned by companies subject to European Union sanctions and stored in the territory of Latvia.

Previous four shipments – a total of 130,000 tons – were delivered to Kenya, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka in 2023 and 2024.

As reported earlier by the Foreign Ministry, on 6 December 2022, the Cabinet passed a decision on responding to the United Nations’ request to mitigate the negative consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine and to help address the food crisis in African, Latin American and South Asian countries. The Cabinet decided to support the donation through the UN World Food Programme of mineral fertilisers owned by companies subject to EU sanctions.

Latvia, together with its foreign partners and international organisations, continues providing assistance to countries that have suffered as a result of the food crisis caused by the Russian war against Ukraine.

The UN World Food Programme is making further arrangement for the next shipments of sanctioned mineral fertilizer from Latvia so as to provide support to countries the most in need of those products.
