On 3 September 2026, bilateral consultations between Latvian and German sanctions experts were held in Riga. During the consultations, Latvian representatives reaffirmed their full and unequivocal solidarity with their German allies regarding the drone incident at Leipzig Airport on 4 August 2026.
In light of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, as well as Russia’s hybrid operations against European Union Member States, the parties emphasised the need to intensify sanctions pressure on Russia by continuing to target sectors that generate significant revenue for Russia, as well as individuals who justify Russia’s aggressive actions and are involved in sanctions evasion.
During the consultations, the parties also discussed ways to improve the effectiveness of existing sanctions, current issues relating to sanctions implementation, and opportunities for closer cooperation on customs control matters.
