On 22 September 2025, in New York, at the United Nations Security Council’s emergency meeting convened at the requested of Estonia over the violations of Estonian and Polish airspace by Russia, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Baiba Braže, delivered a statement on behalf of Latvia and Lithuania.
“By its aggressive, revanchist behaviour, Russia continues to fundamentally undermine global security, disregards the UN Charter, ignores the demands of the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly.
We stand in full solidarity with our neighbour and ally Estonia and vehemently condemn the violation of Estonian airspace by Russia on 19 September. On 12 September, the UNSC Council strongly condemned Russia’s incursion into Polish airspace, and the Baltic states and Poland warned of the risk of further provocations by Russia. Just some days later, the UNSC is being convened over Russia’s violations in Estonia.
The entire Europe is affected by Russia’s subconventional threat – sabotage of critical infrastructure, GPS jamming, disinformation campaigns, cyber-attacks.
Russia’s war against Ukraine is of an imperial and colonial nature. Russia ignores the mandate of the UN Security Council and disregards the UN Charter. Let us remember Georgia in 2008, Crimea in 2014 and the full-scale aggression against Ukraine since 2022.
Latvia, together with its allies, will continue to support Ukraine and the efforts of the United States and European partners to achieve a lasting and just peace. We will also continue to invest in our deterrence, defence, and resilience capabilities. We will continue working closely with our allies to ensure that Russia’s provocations are met with a firm response.”
