Baiba Braže in a telephone call with EU High Representative, Kaja Kallas, and ministers

On 19 January 2026, at the initiative of EU High Representative, Kaja Kallas, EU foreign ministers held a telephone call on current matters.

Baiba Braže underlined:

“It is crucial for EU partners to maintain a united position, coordinated action, and communication, alongside direct and continuous dialogue with the United States.”

She also noted that the Arctic remains important for the security of the Euro-Atlantic area.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs also urged to maintain focus on Ukraine: “All allies must fully support Ukraine’s self-defence capabilities and efforts to contain Russia, and it is essential to move forward quickly with the 20th round of sanctions.”

As regards tariffs, the Minister said: “Mutual trade restrictions are detrimental to both sides and provide no gain to either transatlantic partner. Only the Kremlin and its supporters would gain from this. It is therefore essential to prevent escalation and address the situation through direct dialogue with the United States.”
