On Tuesday, 20 May 2025, in Brussels, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, met with the European Commissioner for Budget, Anti-Fraud and Public Administration, Piotr Serafin, for a discussion on Latvia’s priorities and the upcoming regulation proposals for the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2028-2034.
In accordance with the national position approved at the Cabinet and the European Affairs Committee of the Saeima, four directions prioritised by Latvia have been mapped out for negotiations on the EU’s next multiannual budget: security and defence; the Cohesion Policy; the Common Agricultural Policy; and the implementation of the Rail Baltica policy. Latvia will advocate for an increase in the overall EU budget, while not supporting a possible merging of the Cohesion and the Common Agricultural Policy into a single financing distribution mechanism.
Proposals for regulations covering the next period will be provisionally published by the European Commission in the summer of 2025.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been successfully navigating the negotiation process for the EU’s long-term budget between the interests of various fields and sectors for 20 years.
