On Thursday, 22 May 2025, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže will address experts from the NATO Political Committee who will be visiting Latvia for the first time to tune in to experience acquired by our country and explore its achievements in the field of terrorism prevention.

Over the past 20 years, Latvia has developed and improved its counter-terrorism system in accordance with the National Counter-Terrorism Plan. It provides for coordinated prevention and response measures by all the institutions concerned in the event of various terrorist threats.

During the visit, NATO Allies will be introduced to the assessment of terrorist threat in Latvia, to efforts on preventing radicalisation, to mechanisms for preventing the financing of terrorism and to measures taken to fend off illegal border crossings in the context of counter-terrorism. Information on those topics will be presented by experts from the Financial Intelligence Unit, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the State Border Guard, the National Armed Forces, and the State Security Service.

During their stay in Latvia, the NATO experts will also visit the NATO Strategic Communications Center of Excellence and the National Armed Forces Joint Headquarters.

Terrorism and radicalisation are global threats that require joint action to counter them. Such visits are particularly important for ensuring coordination and closer cooperation among Allies. In the NATO Political Committee, experts from Allied countries discuss the development of NATO policies, including in the field of counter-terrorism and prevention of radicalisation.

The expert visit has been organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with support from the Latvian Armed Forces Joint Headquarters, the NATO Strategic Communications Center of Excellence, and other Latvian institutions concerned.
