On Sunday, 1 March 2026, during an extraordinary meeting of the European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs Council, convened by EU High Representative, Kaja Kallas, to address the situation in Iran and the Middle East, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, stated:

“Iran has consistently and deliberately acted to disrupt stability both in the Middle East and globally, including by providing direct assistance to Russia in its war against Ukraine. Iran has supplied Russia with more than 50,000 Shahed drones, the same ones it is currently using to attack countries in the Middle East. Weapons and technology built by Iran have helped kill thousands of innocent Ukrainians. Just like Russia in Ukraine, Iran is presently carrying out terrorist attacks against innocent civilians in the Persian Gulf countries.

Iran has repeatedly violated its international commitments and posed a threat to global peace and security. For decades, Iran has supported, armed, financed, and trained terrorist groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. The Iranian regime has openly maintained its unlawful nuclear programme despite repeated diplomatic efforts by the EU, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Iran has been extensively involved in circumventing sanctions.

Latvia stands in full solidarity with the Iranian people.

Latvia strongly condemns Iran’s unprovoked attacks on countries in the Middle East region – Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and the United Arab Emirates. These attacks pose a threat to regional and international peace and security.

The priority now is to ensure the protection of civilians and prevent further escalation of the situation. Stability in the region is essential for global security.

Iran must terminate its unlawful nuclear programme and comply with its international commitments, which would allow it to return to the negotiating table.”

B. Braže also stressed that Latvia has repeatedly condemned the actions of the Iranian regime, including its failure to cooperate with the international community and the IAEA regarding its unlawful nuclear programme. Latvia will continue to closely monitor developments in the Middle East in close coordination with embassies, the EU, and other countries.
