On 19 November 2025, in Beijing, the Ambassador of Latvia Kārlis Eihenbaums hosted a meeting for Ambassadors from the Asian, African, South American and European countries. Accredited to the PRC. The aim of the event was to strengthen diplomatic ties and promote discussions in a multilateral format on Latvia’s priorities after being elected to the United Nations Security Council.

The Latvian Ambassador, in his address to the participants, highlighted Latvia as a trusted and responsible international partner making a significant contribution to international security by strongly supporting Ukraine in its fight for its sovereignty and standing up against the Russian war of aggression. By doing so, Latvia strengthens the fundamental principles and international order enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

Ambassador Eihenbaums noted that Latvia is determined to play an active role in the UN Security Council, defend international law and the UN Charter, support Ukraine's territorial integrity, address hybrid threats, as well as fighting the spread of disinformation. The Ambassador also underlined the need to prevent all forms of violence in armed conflicts and achieve justice for victims.

The Latvian Ambassador called for practical cooperation within the UN system, while pointing out that Latvia will work closely with each of the members of the UN Security Council.

China’s role as a permanent Member of the UN Security Council, its experience and its specific responsibilities in the work of the UN and the UN Security Council were also noted. Ambassador Eihenbaums welcomed China’s support for the Latvian candidacy for a seat on the UN Security Council and he expressed confidence in further close, constructive cooperation with Chinese diplomats and foreign diplomats accredited in Beijing.

The event was implemented as part of the public diplomacy programme in support of the priorities of Latvia’s membership of the United Nations Security Council and promoting Latvia’s visibility. On 3 July 2025 Latvia was elected to the UN Security Council for the term from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2027. Membership of the UN Security Council will be a key instrument in pursuit and protection of Latvia’s foreign policy interests. Latvia’s membership is an important instrument for the protection of Latvia’s foreign policy interests, as well as enhancing Latvia’s influence in multilateral diplomacy.
