On 18 February 2026, during an official ceremony at the residence of the President of Iceland in Bessastaðir, Latvian Ambassador Dāvis Daudzvārdis formally presented his letter of credence to the President of the Republic of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir.

Discussions with the President of Iceland focused on the very cordial and close bilateral relations between Latvia and Iceland, as well as collaboration in a range of multilateral settings, notably the Baltic and Nordic (NB8) cooperation format, as well as NATO. The Ambassador pointed out that Iceland will always have a special place in Latvian history, as it was the first country to recognise the restoration of independence of the Republic of Latvia in 1991. The President of Iceland acknowledged that even small countries can have a significant and historic impact through their example, as Latvia and Iceland are presently demonstrating through their support for Ukraine. The role of the NB8 cooperation format in providing both military and civilian support to Ukraine was also highlighted, particularly in the field of energy, where Iceland has extensive experience and expertise.

Fostering of mutual contacts between the people of both countries, including in economy, culture, tourism, and education, plays an important role. It is precisely these contacts between people that form the basis for deepening the good relations between the two countries. The Latvian diaspora in Iceland also plays an important role in this regard, and supporting its activities will be one of the Ambassador’s main priorities in his future work. Currently, around 3,000 Latvian nationals reside permanently in Iceland, engaging actively in the country’s public life and economy, while also continuing to maintain close links with Latvia.

The Latvian Ambassador to Iceland resides in Oslo, Norway.

Since 2023, Karl Georg Sigurbjörnsson has been serving as Latvia’s Honorary Consul in Iceland.
