On 20 November 2020, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, had an online meeting with the Ambassador of Afghanistan, Gul Hussain Ahmadi, who is concluding his assignment with Latvia.

Andris Pelšs thanked the Ambassador of Afghanistan for successful cooperation in the strengthening of bilateral relations between Afghanistan and Latvia. Gul Hussain Ahmadi underlined in particular Latvia’s support for Afghanistan provided by the Latvian troops as part of NATO Resolute Support mission to support the peace process.

The Afghani Ambassador added that in 2018 Latvia and Afghanistan marked the 90th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations, and he expressed conviction that further cooperation between the two countries should be developed both in international organisations, for instance, the United Nations, and also in the important area of business and trade.

During their conversation, transport and logistics were pointed to as the most promising areas for economic cooperation, and Riga was identified as an advantageous transit corridor for Afghan goods.
