On 14 and 15 May 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs holds the annual training session for consular officers working at the Latvian diplomatic and consular missions. This training event brings together 51 officials currently serving at Latvian missions and those to be posted abroad this summer to perform consular duties.
As usual, this year’s training session will focus attention on crisis response, which includes a practical enactment of a consular crisis, and on communication in consular matters. The participants will have an in-depth look at the new model of the European Union emergency travel document, which the missions abroad will begin issuing towards the end of this year. Attention will also be paid to customer service, including in difficult situations. In addition, the training will cover topics on the protection of children's rights, artificial intelligence, as well as services available electronically and remotely.
Lecturers are experts from Ministry of Justice, the Riga Orphans’ Court, the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs, the Information Centre of the Ministry of the Interior, and the School of Public Administration, as well as the staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Annual training sessions for Latvia’s diplomatic and consular officers were first held since 1995, and they have become a long-standing tradition that ensures effective sharing of latest information and experience among consular staff employed both in the Ministry headquarters and missions abroad.
