From 22 to 25 September 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, will participate in the High-level Week of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
An extraordinary meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has been convened over the violation of the Estonian airspace. The event will be held at 17:00 (EET) on 22 September. The focus of the 80th Session of the UN general Assembly focus is placed on the UN80 Initiative launched by the UN Secretary-General to make the UN system more effective and modern in response to the present-day global challenges.
On 3 June 2025, with broad support from the UN member states, Latvia was elected to the United Nations Security Council for the first time in its history (2026–2027). Latvia will assume its duties in the UN Security Council on 1 January 2026. The main goal of the UNSC membership – to strengthen Latvia's security, including by supporting Ukraine.
In order to strengthen cooperation in bilateral and multilateral formats, to present Latvia’s priorities to the UNSC, and to explain and promote understanding of the security situation in our region, during the week of the UNGA 80th Session, Foreign Minister Baiba Braže is scheduled to participate in, and deliver speeches at the following events and hold bilateral meetings with foreign ministers from Africa, Europe, Latin America, and Asia.

- Participation in the Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Friends of Mediation organised by the Foreign Ministers of Finland and Türkiye.
- Delivering a statement at the High-level Reception for the Rising Nations Initiative “Supporting Small Island Developing States and Low-Lying Coastal States”.
- Delivering a statement at the meeting “Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance”.
Russia’s responsibility for the international crimes committed in Ukraine, the strengthening of international order, and the need for global governance reform will be emphasized while participating in UN events, which coincides with Latvia’s priorities for its work on the UN Security Council.
Latvia has set the following priority thematic areas for its membership of the UN Security Council: (1) safeguard the fundamental principles of international law enshrined in the UN Charter, including to achieve a just peace in Ukraine; (2) seek solutions to emerging security threats (including hybrid threats, cyber-attacks, AI-related security risks, disinformation); (3) promote gender equality, stand up for prevention of sexual violence in armed conflicts. - The High-level Week of the UNGA 80th Session takes place in New York from 22 to 30 September. Alongside discussions on current international developments, the session is to focus on international solidarity and strengthening the rules-based international order.
