Edgars Rinkēvičs uzsver ciešākas sadarbības nozīmi starp Eiropas Savienības un Latīņamerikas un Karību reģiona valstīm

On 14 December 2020, the Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, took part in an informal Meeting of Foreign Ministers from the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean, who met today online in a virtual format.

In his remarks, Edgars Rinkēvičs pointed out that both regions and their countries should join forces, sharing knowledge and experience of how to address the complex challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is essential that the most dependable and effective way be found towards economic recovery and the maximum use of opportunities offered by various trade and association agreements. Circumstances of the pandemic are conducive to creativity and scientific findings. Sharing them will facilitate a speedier exit from the crisis as well as economic recovery and growth.

The Foreign Minister briefed the participants about the digital solutions created by Latvian companies that help in dealing with challenges posed by the COVID-19 crisis.

The Minister also underlined that under the pandemic it is equally important to combat disinformation and protect society from its consequences. The accountability and transparency of various social media platforms must be improved to curb disinformation. At the same time, fundamental rights such as freedom of expression must be supported and strengthened.

Besides measures to address the immediate challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the participants also discussed partnership for a green economy and cooperation in the digital sector. 

As part of the meeting on 14-15 December, several forums are being held in a video-conferencing format on aspects of digitalisation and inter-regional cooperation for economic recovery and growth. Several Latvian companies have applied for participation in forums on 15 December.

The meeting was hosted by the German Presidency of the Council of the European Union and it brought together the foreign ministers of 52 countries, as well as representatives from the European Commission, the European Investment Bank and the World Food Programme.
