At the time when Russia and Belarus are launching full-scale military action against Ukraine, Alexander Lukashenko’s illegitimate regime is seeking to strengthen its authoritarian power, suppressing the freedom aspirations of the Belarusian people and dragging Belarus increasingly deeper into the bloody war in Ukraine.

The so-called referendum that took place in Belarus on 27 February 2022 on amendments to the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus was organised at the backdrop of sweeping repression and was held in a non-democratic and non-transparent manner. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia does not recognise the so-called referendum staged by Alexander Lukashenko’s illegitimate regime and any of its results.

It is only Belarusian people who can decide on its future in a free and fair election in the presence of international organisations and international observers.
