On 22 July 2022, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the European Commissioner for Financial Stability, Financial Services and the Capital Markets Union, Mairead McGuinness, in Riga to discuss the implementation of EU sanctions against Russia and Belarus.

During the meeting, Rinkēvičs stressed that the sanctions imposed against Russia and Belarus should be implemented uniformly by all EU Member States.

Rinkēvičs and McGuinness exchanged ideas on how to improve the procedure for preparing and adopting EU sanctions. The Foreign Minister drew attention to the need for strengthening human resources that deal with the implementation, application, and control of EU sanctions on a daily basis at the national level, as the volume of work has increased significantly since the introduction of new sanctions against Russia and Belarus.
