The Latvian Ambassador Mārtiņš Klīve presents his credentials to the President of Iceland

On 31 May 2022, in Reykjavik, in the official residence of the President of Iceland, Bessastaðir, the Ambassador of Latvia, Mārtiņš Klīve, presented his letter of credence to the President of Iceland, Guðni Jóhannesson.

In a conversation with the President, the Ambassador highlighted the good and friendly relations between Latvia and Iceland, as well as making note of the centenary of diplomatic relations between the two countries celebrated this year. A symbolic significance will also be attached to the visit of the Presidents of the three Baltic States to Reykjavik to mark 30 years since Iceland became the first country to recognise the restored independence of Latvia and the other Baltic States.

In the context of the war waged by Russia on Ukraine, cooperation in the field of security has gained special importance. “Latvia highly values the close partnership with Iceland both in NATO and in the Baltic-Nordic cooperation (NB8),” the Ambassador underlined.

The President of Iceland, Guðni Jóhannesson, commended the contribution made by the Latvian diaspora to Iceland’s growth and the development of local communities.

In his ambassadorial post, Mārtiņš Klīve succeeds Judīte Dobele, who had been serving as Ambassador to Iceland since 2018.
