Latvia condemns the organization of the Russian presidential election in the Transnistrian region of Moldova as well as in the regions of Georgia Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which are under a temporary occupation by the Russian armed forces, and will not recognise the results of the said “election” in those regions.

Latvia condemns Russia’s arbitrary and illegitimate activities in the Transnistrian region of Moldova – the opening of its polling stations in the region without an approval from the Government of Moldova. Latvia also underlines that the continued occupation of Georgia’s regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia constitutes a gross violation by Russia of international law, earlier international commitments assumed by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and by Moscow itself.

Latvia reiterates its unwavering support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova and Georgia within their internationally recognised borders.

On earlier occasions, Latvia has already expressed its position concerning the illegitimate organisation of Russia’s presidential election in the Ukrainian territories temporarily occupied and illegally annexed by Russia – see Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
