Jamaikas ārlietu ministre ANO, NY

On 22 September 2022, in New York, during the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Jamaica, Kamina Johnson Smith. The Ministers discussed the relations between the two countries, recent international developments, and cooperation in international organisations.

Edgars Rinkēvičs recognised that Latvia and Jamaica, for the most part, were cooperating in international organisations. “Latvia sees the potential of working closer together with Jamaica in multilateral formats in the areas of common priorities, including the fight against disinformation, and climate action,” the Minister noted.

Bilateral political consultations were held in 2019. We are prepared to develop cooperation in the areas of mutual interest, for instance water resource management, waste water treatment, production of renewable energy and the management of renewable resources, the Minister said.

The Minister pointed out that Latvia was offering good opportunities for receiving higher education, and he called on students from Jamaica to make use of the ERASMUS+ exchange programme.

Edgars Rinkēvičs welcomed Jamaica’s support for Ukraine and its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Latvian Foreign Minister informed his counterpart that in 2025, for the first time, Latvia would stand as a candidate in elections to the United Nations Security Council for the term of 2026–2027.
