On 13 June 2022, in Cairo, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

In a conversation with the Secretary-General, Edgars Rinkēvičs expressed support for a close dialogue between the Arab League and the European Union in the implementation of the EU’s Neighbourhood Policy with regard to its southern neighbours. At this point, a broader dialogue between the Arab League and the EU on the impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine on their member states has the potential to facilitate the identification of the most acute problems and acting in a coordinated manner to eliminate them.

The Latvian Foreign Minister underlined that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has created unprecedented complications in the circulation of food worldwide. Nevertheless, the international community must be united in condemning any violation of sovereignty and disregard for international norms.

The Minister invited the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States to visit Latvia.
