28 July 2022 marks 100 years since the United States recognised Latvia de jure and the two countries established diplomatic relations. Up until the restoration of Latvia’s independence in 1991, the United States consistently refused to recognize the illegal incorporation of Latvia into the USSR. The United States helped restore Latvia’s independence and supported its integration into NATO and the EU.

Latvia and the United States can boast an active political dialogue, excellent cooperation in the defence sector, promising trade contacts, and a common understanding of democratic values and the rules-based international order.
