On May 22, the Ambassador of Latvia to the United States Mr Andris Teikmanis was in Lansing, Michigan to meet the new Governor Ms Gretchen Whitmer. The Adjutant General Paul D. Rogers of the Michigan National Guard also joined the meeting.
Ambassador Teikmanis noted the excellent cooperation between Latvia and Michigan in the area of military for now over 26 years. Both sides agreed to work on expanding cooperation in the areas of education, culture and economics. Considering the strong friendship between Latvia and Michigan, the Ambassador invited Gov. Whitmer to visit Latvia in the near future.
To further Latvia-Michigan State to State Partnership, Ambassador Teikmanis visited Michigan State University and met with the representatives of the Department of Forestry and the Department of Animal Science. The meeting presented perspectives for cooperation in the area of forestry.
On May 21, however, Honorary Consul Mr Andris Lācis organized the Ambassador’s meeting with the local Latvian community in Detroit.
Gov. Whitmer (D) has been in office since January of 2019. Her predecessor Gov. Rick Snyder (R) was in office for the past eight years. Maj. Gen. Rogers was in Latvia this past April and met with the Defense Minister Artis Pabriks, as well as with the Commander of the Latvian National Armed Forces Lieutenant General Leonīds Kalniņš.
Latvian National Armed Forces and Michigan National Guard have been cooperating since April 27, 1992.
