On March 7, the Ambassador of Latvia Mr Andris Teikmanis opened the exhibition stand of the Freeport of Riga at the international exhibition Seatrade Cruise Global 2018 taking place in Fort Lauderdale from March 6 to 8. The opening was also witnessed by members of the Latvian delegation and cooperation partners of the Freeport of Riga – Riga Passenger Terminal, LiveRiga and tourism companies such as Latvia Tour.
During the opening of the stand, the Ambassador emphasized that this year Latvia celebrates its centennial, however Latvia’s territory and especially the city of Riga has been an important trade and shipping hub in the Baltic Sea Region for centuries. Mr Ansis Zeltiņš, the CEO of the Freeport of Riga, talked about the development plans of the port of Riga, especially in regards to cruise ships. In the last few years, there has been a significant increase in the number of U.S. cruise ships coming into the port of Riga – the goal of the city is to become a regional center for cruise ships. In the last year, Riga received around 8.6 thousand cruise ship passengers from the United States, reaching 28% of the total number.
Seatrade Cruise Global 2018 has been one of the largest cruise ship exhibitions in the United States for more than 30 years. Fort Lauderdale (Broward County) is also the seat of the Honorary Consulate of Latvia in Florida with Dr Barry Mowel as the Honorary Consul.
