President of the Republic of Latvia (2007–2011), H.E. Valdis Zatlers visits the Republic of Korea

From 7 through to 11 October 2018, the President of the Republic of Latvia from 2007 to 2011, H.E. Valdis Zatlers, with his spouse Mrs Lilita Zatlere were on an introductory visit in the Republic of Korea at the invitation of the Korea Foundation.

As part of his visit, the former President met with officials from the ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea, the Latvia-Korea group of interparliamentary cooperation, and members of the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee of the Korean Parliament; he also visited several universities, the Demilitarized Zone, and the Embassy of Latvia in Seoul, where he met with Ambassador Pēteris Vaivars, the Ambassador’s spouse, and the Embassy staff.

Looking back at his stay, the former President noted that its programme had been loaded and exciting. Everything observed and discussed during his visit has left a positive impression and is proof to the potential for further development of the Latvian-Korean bilateral relations. During the meetings with public officials, university staff and members of civil society in Korea, Valdis Zatlers gained a good insight into regional matters and possible further scenarios on the North Korean issue.

The former President commended the Embassy for what it had achieved over the three years since its establishment, and for the work initiated. It has been an honour for the Latvian Embassy to welcome already the second visit from a president (on 13 February 2018, the Embassy premises were officially inaugurated by the President of Latvia, H.E. Raimonds Vējonis) and to introduce the distinguished guest to the Embassy’s activities and current projects of bilateral cooperation.
