From 4 to 12 May, the Ambassador of Latvia to Malaysia and Singapore, residing in Seoul, Korea, made a working visit to Malaysia and Singapore. The Ambassador met with public officials and businessmen from both countries to discuss opportunities for intensifying business cooperation, meet with the Latvian diaspora and take part in the opening night of the EU Film Festival in Singapore. The programme of the film festival also includes an outstanding Latvian documentary, Ručs un Norie.
In Malaysia, the Ambassador had meetings with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, MATRADE and business organisations. Business cooperation with Malaysia is at its very beginning; however, as recognised by the Malaysian officials, businesses are interested in building closer contacts with Latvia. Latvia in turn should be active in presenting the opportunities it can offer to Malaysian entrepreneurs. During the meetings, it was agreed that a business seminar will be jointly organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and MATRADE at the end of this year, and the selection process has been initiated for an honorary consul of Latvia in Malaysia. Both sides noted the successful visit of Latvian pharmaceutical companies to Malaysia, during which Latvian businessmen established good contacts with potential partners for cooperation. The visit was organised by the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
As part of his visit to Singapore, Ambassador Vaivars met with representatives from the Latvian diaspora, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Economy, and the business community. The Ambassador visited the National Gallery Singapore and the Cyber Security Agency, as well as attending a reception hosted by the President of Singapore for the ambassadors accredited in the country, and several EU events.
Singapore is currently the largest Asian investor in Latvia, which is evidenced by the presence of several large Singaporean companies in Latvia, as well as Latvia’s fourth largest trade partner in Asia.
Participants in the meetings highlighted the substantial potential for expanding cooperation which could be realised by organizing visits of senior officials accompanied by business delegations. Offering favourable investment conditions to Singaporean businesses could increase their investments in Latvia. The Representative Office of LIAA in Singapore, under the capable leadership of Lāsma Līdaka, is currently the main support base for businessmen from both countries and the office offered significant assistance for the organisation of the Ambassador’s visit.
While in Singapore, Ambassador Pēteris Vaivars took part in the Europe Day celebrations, at which the visitors were offered an opportunity to taste Latvian products including Riga Black Balsam. The Ambassador also opened the EU Film Festival at which Latvia was represented this year by an outstanding documentary, Ručs un Norie. The film was screened on Sunday, 15 May.
