On 18 February, the Ambassador of Latvia to the Republic of Korea, Pēteris Vaivars, visited the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) and met with its president, Kim Jung-Haeng.
The Ambassador and the KOC President discussed the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeong Chang and the participation of the Latvian team. The Ambassador mentioned the winter sports in which Latvia is among the leaders, and the Ambassador and the KOC President agreed to work together closely on organizing the visits of official delegations. KOC President Kim Jung-Haeng said that Korea was actively preparing for the major events so that Korean people could enjoy medal-winning performance of their athletes. He also commended Latvia’s achievements in winter sports highlighting the strong rivalry in skeleton competitions between Latvia and Korea both aspiring for top ranks in this sport on the world scale.
During a visit to the Olympic Park, the Ambassador together with representatives from the Korea Ice Hockey Association discussed prospective cooperation in hockey. Korea, in its capacity of the host of the Olympic Games, will be taking part in the olympic ice hockey tournament. In this light, the team is interested in organizing matches with hockey players from the Latvian national team and also promoting exchanges in youth hockey.
It was agreed that each side will be looking at opportunities for holding ‘friendship matches’ in ice hockey this year.
