Embassy in Czech Republic holds Christmas reception

On 13 December at the Grebovka Villa in Prague, the Latvian Embassy in the Czech Republic, in association with the CEELI (Central Eastern Europe Law Initiative) institute, organised a Christmas concert and reception. The concert was presented by the well-known Latvian harpsichordist Aina Kalnciema and the young and talented violinist Paula Sumane. During their performance, guests from the Prague diplomatic corps, representatives of the Czech cultural and educational communities, and Prague-based Latvians were offered an opportunity to listen to compositions by Bach, Scarlatti, Paganini, Karlsons, and other composers.   

Aina Kalnciema is an internationally renowned Latvian harpsichordist. She has graduated from the St Petersburg State Conservatory with honours, where in addition to studying piano performance, she also mastered the organ. Aina Kalnciema studied the harpsichord in Germany, Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, and Norway. She has presented solo performances since 1978 and to date, has performed in the majority of European states, as well as in America, Canada, and Australia. She has presented joint concerts with such distinguished musicians from Latvia, Russia, and other European states as Baiba Skride, Monighetti, Duftschmid, Alexei and Mikhail Utkin, James, Holloway, Mustonen, Rudin, Grindenko, the Hortus Musicus, the Musica Viva, also with Latvian, Lithuanian, and Polish chamber orchestras, the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, musicians from La Petite Bande, the Musica Antiqua Koln, Les Arts Florissants, and many others. At present, Aina Kalnciema, teaches harpsichord at the Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music, holds the position of the president of the Bach Music Foundation and is the director of the International Bach Chamber Music Festival.

Aina Kalnciema presented the concert together with the young Latvian violinist Paula Sumane. At the age of 18, Ms Sumane has already achieved considerable success in the international arena: she has won many competitions in Latvia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Romania, Italy, France, and Germany. As a soloist she has presented concerts together with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, the Hofer Symphoniker, the Baden-Baden und Freiburg, the SWR-Orchestra, and others. Currently, she is further mastering the art of violin performance with Boris Garlitsky at the Paris Conservatoire.
