Welcome speech of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Andrejs Pildegovičs

Andrejs Pildegovičs

Dear visitor, it is our honor to welcome you to the website of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Latvia to the United Nations.

In 2018 Latvia celebrates the centenary of the modern democratic republic, and it will continue to be an active member of the United Nations that voices its position on the topical issues of the global agenda.

Since regaining of independence and accession to the UN on September 17, 1991, Latvia has been a strong supporter of multilateralism. Latvia considers that this unique Organization is the proper place for finding global solutions for global problems. Latvia supports the bold vision of Secretary General António Guterres on how the UN as an organization can improve its capacity and efficiency to effect developments on the ground.

Current pressing issues – such as conflicts, terrorism, climate change and migration – to name a few -  affirm the relevance and increased interdependence of all three pillars of the United Nations – peace and security, human rights, and development. It is even more relevant now, as the UN and its member states advance with the implementation of the bold 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development Goals.

Latvia fully supports placing conflict prevention at the center of the United Nations agenda. Having experienced brutal foreign occupation for more than 50 years, Latvia is proud to be a staunch supporter of international law and a promoter of democracy and human rights. These principles are fundamental to maintaining the international order based on predictability, stability and security of States.

Consequently, Latvia would like to reiterate its unwavering support to the international efforts to find an expeditious and peaceful resolution of conflicts, including in Europe.

Latvia pledges continuous support to the UN efforts to modernize UN peacekeeping. Latvia has contributed intelligence specialists to MINUSMA in Mali since early 2016, and has increased its contribution in 2017.

I very much hope that you will find the content of this site informative and useful.
