On 15 September 2020 in Vienna, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to the United Nations, the OSCE and other International Organisations, Katrīna Kaktiņa, presented her credentials to the Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), Dr. Lassina Zerbo.
During their conversation, the officials discussed latest developments in the organisation and most important international events. Katrīna Kaktiņa underlined the importance of the Treaty’s taking effect and Latvia’s unwavering support for the work of the organisation. The Ambassador also praised the contribution of the CTBTO’s international monitoring system to security and the organisation’s focus on interaction between science and diplomacy. Katrīna Kaktiņa confirmed that Latvia is interested in a continued practical cooperation with the CTBTO, which enhances national expertise and technical capabilities.
The CTBTO's aim is to prohibit countries from carrying out nuclear tests, and an international monitoring system has been set up for this purpose. Although the Treaty on the establishment of the organisation has not yet entered into force, a Preparatory Commission and a Provisional Technical Secretariat are active in Vienna.
