On 29 November 2019 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs will launch a monograph titled “Latvijas Eiropas ceļš: 15<30<100” (Latvia’s European Way). The event will be attended by the Vice President of the European Commission, Valdis Dombrovskis.
The publication examines the significance of the Baltic Way in the restoration of Latvia’s independence, socio-economic changes over the 15 years following Latvia’s accession to the European Union (EU), and the particular processes of change in the European Union in the context of contemporary political and economic challenges to Latvia: the current state of affairs and future prospects as well as Latvia’s role in the EU decision making process, including in research and innovation.
Grass roots enthusiasm on a mass scale was a decisive political element in the Baltic Way as one of the principal political campaigns of the 20th century. I believe that there is a way to present the history of our state so that the world understands it with their hearts and minds, and we ourselves do not lose our way, noted Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs, one of the authors of the monograph, looking back at the importance of the Baltic Way in his article.
The authors of articles will take part in the event’s two panel discussions: Vice President of the European Commission, Valdis Dombrovskis; Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zanda Kalniņa–Lukaševica; Member of the European Parliament, Ivars Ījabs; Associated Professor at the University of Latvia, Daunis Auers; and researcher at the European Policy Research Institute and the Latvian Institute of International Affairs, Aldis Austers. A discussion on the path of Latvia’s politics to Europe will be moderated by the Professor at the University of Latvia, Žaneta Ozoliņa, and a discussion on Latvian economy moving towards Europe, by the Professor at the University of Latvia, Inna Šteinbuka.
Representatives from Latvian national and EU institutions, non-governmental organisations, think-tanks, the education, science, financial and economic sectors, and politicians have been invited to attend.
The monograph was published by the University of Latvia Academic Press in association with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Policy Research Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Latvia, and the Latvian Association of Political Scientists. The publication has been supported by the European Economic Area Mechanism and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism.
