On 22 November 2019 in Beijing, the Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia, Maija Manika, submitted her credentials to the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping.
During the meeting, the Ambassador and the President praised the positive dynamics of bilateral relations between Latvia and China and they expressed conviction that further cooperation will develop successfully in the areas such as trade and investments, tourism, transport and logistics, as well as culture and education.
The Ambassador stressed the need for strengthening cooperation in innovations by moving ahead with the investment project by China’s leading genomics institute in Latvia, in the field of life sciences. Latvia, being a European Union (EU) Member State, will continue providing contribution to the development of relationship between the EU and China, and will also participate in the Belt and Road Initiative and in cooperation between Central and Eastern European Countries and China (the ‘17+1’ format).
China is a country of global importance and the largest trade partner to Latvia in Asia. It was one of the first countries to recognise the independence of Latvia in 1991.
