On 15 November 2019 in Skopje, the Ambassador of Latvia, Gunta Pastore, submitted her credentials to the President of the Republic of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski.

Officials commended the good relationship between Latvia and North Macedonia. The Ambassador expressed satisfaction with the expected accession of North Macedonia to NATO as the 30th member state of the Alliance. President Pendarovski gave thanks for the swift ratification of the protocol on the accession of North Macedonia to NATO in the Parliament of Latvia.

In a discussion on the European Union (EU) issues, the Ambassador said that Latvia would continue strongly supporting the EU’s enlargement policy, the EU perspective for the Western Balkans and the launching of accession negotiations with the Republic of North Macedonia. Having fulfilled the criteria set by the EU, having reached complicated compromises and ensured progress with reforms, the country deserves that EU accession talks are started.

As part of the accreditation visit, Gunta Pastore met with the Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov. The Ambassador commended North Macedonia’s determination to take the path of integration with the EU and carry out major reforms. The historic Prespa Agreement is an example of building good neighbourly relations in the Western Balkans. Latvia regrets that the European Council in October postponed its decision on the opening of accession negotiations with the Republic of North Macedonia.

The Ambassador also met with the Chairman of the Foreign Policy Committee at the Assembly (Parliament) of North Macedonia, Antonio Miloshoski, for a discussion on EU-integration-related legislative process in North Macedonia.

Gunta Pastore then visited the new premises of the Latvian Honorary Consulate in Skopje and met with the Honorary Consul of Latvia in North Macedonia, Zorancho Mitrovski. The Ambassador praised the Honorary Consul’s work for the benefit of Latvia, including the provision of the much-needed consular assistance to Latvian nationals on a daily basis.

The Ambassador of Latvia resides in Prague, the Czech Republic.
