On 15 November 2019, looking ahead to the 101st anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Latvia, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, hosted a reception for the resident and non-resident ambassadors accredited to Latvia, members of the Saeima (Latvian Parliament) and the government, members of the European Parliament and the Foreign Ministry’s cooperation partners.
We know that the strength of each country lies in its people: the country is as strong as its people, said the Foreign Minister. The 101-year-long history of our state demonstrates that we have been able to stand up for ourselves, for our country, as well as reaching out to help others, the Minister underlined.
The traditional reception hosted by the Foreign Minister on the occasion of the national day is special this year because the Foreign Service is celebrating its centenary. The Foreign Minister drew the audience’s attention to the fact that the Foreign Service has been the only state institution that has existed for 101 years. Diplomats worked across the globe both in the first period of independence and during the occupation to keep the idea of state continuity alive.
Edgars Rinkēvičs thanked his colleagues, cooperation partners and foreign diplomats and encouraged them to strengthen Latvia and think about the country not only on holidays but also on a daily basis.
