Latvian Foreign Minister and the Speaker of the Kyrgyz Parliament discuss promoting political and economic cooperation

On 16 October 2019, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the Speaker of the Parliament of the Kyrgyz Republic, Dastanbek Dzhumabekov, who is in Latvia on an official visit.

The Latvian Foreign Minister expressed satisfaction with the visit having brought the opportunity to intensify political dialogue between Latvia and Kyrgyzstan. The Speaker of the Kyrgyz Parliament noted that on its reform path, Kyrgyzstan was interested in Latvia’s experience, especially in the strengthening of parliamentary democracy.

The officials discussed the ways to dynamise trade cooperation between the two countries and they mentioned the transport and logistics sector as a prospective direction for cooperation. Speaker Dzhumabekov said that Kyrgyzstan would also like to develop cooperation in education and is interested in expanded possibilities for young people from Kyrgyzstan to study at higher education institutions in Latvia.

The Foreign Minister underlined that Latvia is following developments in Central Asia, and Kyrgyzstan’s perspective of the processes in the region is of great value.

The Speaker of the Kyrgyz Parliament, Dastanbek Dzhumabekov and a parliamentary delegation is in Latvia on an official visit from 14 to 16 October.
