Parliamentary Secretary Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica: The fight against disinformation requires a long-term systematic and coordinated approach

On 4 October 2019, the Parliamentary Secretary of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, met with the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak, Republic, František Ružička, for a discussion on the most urgent issues related to the EU Multiannual Financial Framework, Brexit, security policy and threats posed by disinformation.

In the discussion on the Multiannual Financial Framework, the need for providing sufficient financing for the Cohesion Policy and ensuring a fair convergence of direct payments in agriculture was underlined. It was also understood that the EU’s multiannual budget be approved in a timely manner. The Parliamentary Secretary also emphasised the role of the Rail Baltica project in regional development and the need to ensure sufficient funding from the EU budget for its completion.

Much attention was devoted to strategic communication, including the EU Action Plan against Disinformation, as well as the experience of Latvia and Slovakia. Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica thanked Slovakia for providing an expert to the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence in Riga.

The fight against disinformation calls for a coordinated and systematic long-term approach, the EU’s East StratCom Task Force should be strengthened, and greater responsibility and transparency of social media should be ensured, the Parliamentary Secretary noted.

During the conversation, special gratitude was offered to Slovakia for its participation in NATO’s multinational battle group based in Ādaži. We highly appreciate Slovakia’s participation in the Canadian-led enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group in Latvia, an important contribution to Latvia’s security and across the entire Alliance, Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica said.

Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica and František Ružička expressed appreciation for the good and close bilateral relations between Latvia and Slovakia, their active political dialogue and shared interests.

Background information

State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak, Republic, František Ružička, was in Latvia with a delegation on a bilateral visit on 3-4 October. They had meetings with senior staff at the STRATCOM Centre of Excellence, with the Chair of the European Affairs Committee at the Saeima (Latvian Parliament) and they visited the National Library of Latvia and an exhibition, “History of the KGB in Latvia”, at the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia.
