The Latvian and Armenian Foreign Ministers discuss cooperation between the two countries

On 18 September 2019, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, had a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, who was in Latvia on an official visit.

The Ministers discussed current bilateral relations between Latvia and Armenia, the relationship between the European Union and Armenia, cooperation in the Eastern Partnership format, the security situation in the South Caucasus region and Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as relations with Russia and recent developments concerning Iran.

The Foreign Ministers expressed interest in continuing an active political dialogue between Latvia and Armenia and cooperation in the field of integration with the EU and NATO; they also highlighted the need for developing cooperation in business and between line ministries and for parliamentary contacts.    

The Armenian Foreign Minister thanked Latvia for the ratification of the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement between the EU and Armenia, describing the EU as an important cooperation partner on the path to the implementation of the necessary institutional reforms in the country.

The Foreign Minister of Latvia underlined the need for a continued positive growth of economic cooperation through expanding business activity in the areas of information and communication technologies, education and culture, as well as seeking ways to increase air traffic between Latvia and Armenia. Edgars Rinkēvičs also expressed support for visa liberalisation with Armenia.

As part of his visit, the Armenian Foreign Minister also met with the President of Latvia, the Speaker of the Saeima (Latvian Parliament), members of the Saeima group for promoting cooperation with the Parliament of Armenia, and the Minister of Defence. Zohrab Mnatsakanyan also visited the National Library of Latvia and delivered a lecture on “Armenia One Year after the Revolution” at the Social Sciences Faculty of the University of Latvia.
