On 13 September 2019, Latvia hosted the Second Baltic-Japan Cooperation Dialogue in Riga with participation of Mr Yasushi Masaki, Director-General of European Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Mr. Andris Pelšs, State Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, Mr Neris Germanas, Vice-Minister of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania and Mr Lembit Uibo, Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia.
The participants welcomed the progress in cooperation between the Baltic countries and Japan in a broad range of areas, such as political and economic dialogue, as well as people-to-people exchanges over the past year. In this regard, representatives from the Baltic countries welcomed the upcoming visit of the Japan Business Federation KEIDANREN as an important step towards boosting trade and investment opportunities of both sides.
The delegations discussed the future of the Baltic-Japan cooperation, focusing on the area of stronger connectivity through advanced technology of 5G and Artificial Intelligence and affirmed the importance and potential of the cooperation and coordination in this area.
During the meeting, views and opinions were exchanged on political developments in East Asia and Europe, including the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Partnership. The participants reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism and rules-based international order.
It was decided to hold the 3rd Japan – Baltic Cooperation Dialogue in Tallinn, Estonia in 2020.
