During a special ceremony held at Riga Castle on 2 September 2019, the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, presented letters of credence to Maija Manika, the new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to the People’s Republic of China.
Maija Manika began working at the Foreign Trade Policy Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1993. During her diplomatic career, Maija Manika took on various assignments at the Ministry headquarters. She was also posted as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Sweden from 2010 to 2013. Maija Manika was the foreign affairs advisor to the President of Latvia from 2015 to 2019.
In her ambassadorial post, Maija Manika will succeed Māris Selga, who has been Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to China since 2016.
China is a country of global importance and the largest trade partner to Latvia in Asia. It was one of the first countries to recognise the independence of Latvia in 1991 and has never recognised the occupation of the Republic of Latvia.
