On 23 August 2019, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, and Political Director Jānis Mažeiks met with high-ranking officials from the United States Department of State and the Department of Energy visiting Latvia on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Baltic Way.
In discussions with the Acting Assistant Secretary of European and Eurasian Affairs, Philip T. Reeker, and the Under Secretary for Nuclear Security of the U.S. Department of Energy, Lisa E. Gordon-Hagerty, the officials addressed the issues of current importance in the bilateral relations between Latvia and the U.S., exchange visits, cooperation in defence, the U.S. military presence in Latvia and the Baltic States region, as well as energy-related topics.
The parties noted in particular the recent visit by the Latvian Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš to the U.S. from 14 to 17 July and his meeting with Vice President Mike Pence, which reaffirmed the importance of a strategic dialogue between Latvia and the U.S.
The visitors from the U.S. Administration highly praised the historic role of Latvia and the other Baltic States in the fight against totalitarianism and the successful development of democratic institutions after the restoration of independence, which has become an inspiring example in pursuit of freedom and for civil society aspirations elsewhere in the world.
During their visit, the officials of the U.S. Administration took part in a flower laying ceremony at the Freedom Monument and attended an official event at Ziemeļblāzma Culture Centre dedicated to the 30 anniversary of the Baltic Way.
