During a special ceremony held at Riga Castle on 1 August 2019, the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, presented letters of credence to Māris Selga, the new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to the United States of America.
Māris Selga began his career in the Latvian Foreign Service in 1994 at the Foreign Ministry’s Planning Group. He has worked in various posts at the Ministry in Riga as well as abroad at the embassies of Latvia to Denmark and the United States of America. From 2008 to 2012, he was Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Egypt, and, since 2016, he has been Latvia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the People’s Republic of China.
As Ambassador of Latvia to the United States, Māris Selga succeeds Andris Teikmanis who has now become the Head of the Chancery of the President of Latvia.
United States of America has been a strategic partner and close ally to Latvia. Through the long years of occupation right up to the renewal of Latvia’s independence in 1991, the United States conscientiously applied a policy of non-recognition thereby offering a contribution of inestimable value in the process of regaining of Latvia’s freedom and independence.
